The Washington Spirit won their third straight match to bring their record to 8-0-3 (2nd place) against a struggling Seattle Reign, who dropped to 2-1-8 and putting them in 13th place out of 14 teams. This was the first rematch of the season and the Spirit exacted revenge for the first game of the season when they lost 0-1 in Seattle. First half goals by Croix Bethune, Andi Sullivan (penalty kick), and Ouleymata Sarr put the team out in front 3-0 before they gave up last minute goals in stoppage time of each half to end with three points.
Aubrey Kingsbury recorded her 450th career save, a mark that only 6 other goalkeepers have made in the league. Bethune continued her remarkable rookie season, adding a goal (her fourth of the season) and her 8th assist on the Sarr goal. She has reached 8 assists faster than any player in the history of the league by reaching that mark in only her 11th game. The next closest players are legends Lauren Holiday (14 games) and Abby Wambach (19).
The Friday night match was played in front of 11,551 humans and a number of dogs as the team celebrated their four-legged fans for Pitchside Pups. Halftime entertainment was provided by America’s Got Talent contestants Christian & Scooby.
