DC Power FC controlled much of the game at Audi Field as they battled Tampa Bay Sun, but they weren’t able to put in any truly dangerous attempts on goal. The majority of the game was a battle of the midfields as both teams tried to press, causing a lot of back and forth action without much in the either team’s box.
It wasn’t until the 88th minute, after the Sun won a ball off the press in midfield and worked the play around the field that the deadlock was ended. A long ball from Sun defender Vivianne Bessette from around 40 yards out went over the defense to forward Cecilie Fløe Nielsen. Fløe was able to chest the ball down and hit a quick near post shot just past Power goalkeeper Morgan Aquino that bounced off the wood and at first angled away from the goal. But the spin of the ball caused it to turn back into the net before an onrushing Carleigh Frilles could get to it.
The Power were unable to get the equalizer in the last 2 minutes of regulation and 5 minutes of extra time. The Power continue to sit at the bottom of the league table, tied with Lexington SC on 16 points, while league leaders Carolina Ascent have 40 points, with a game in hand on the Power.
